Politicians Gone AWOL: Always Weak On Liberty

After three duplicitous years of flip-flopping and voting both for and against various elements of the lightning-fast liberation and the glacially-slow democratization of Iraq, the "real" John Kerry has decided to stand up and be counted -- or, at long last, to be discounted as totally unprincipled.

In his June 12, 2006 address to the "Take Back America" rally of reactionary-Left Democrats, the Massachusetts Senator and unsuccessful 2004 Democrat candidate for President has returned to his "AWOL" -- Always Weak On Liberty -- persona of almost 35 years.

Dating all the way back to his early 1970s Vietnam Era alliance with the George McGovern-Jane Fonda-Ted Kennedy peace-at-any-price wing of the Democrat Party, Kerry was always in reliable lock-step with those "progressive" (code word for ultra-Left) radicals who hated Presidents Nixon and Reagan as much as they do George W. Bush today.

Only in late 2002 did he break ranks and vote for -- "but only after I had voted against," he assures -- the Bush-Cheney legislation which authorized and funded the military overthrow of Saddam's tyranny in Iraq.

He now alleges that he was "lied to" about the reasons for this Bush-led liberation of 25 million oppressed Iraqis. He renounces his votes in favor of the Iraq liberation, peacekeeping and nation-building efforts of the last three years and calls all of this a terrible mistake.

And he loudly demands (as he did in the case of Vietnam) that all US forces be out of this nascent and highly vulnerable democracy in just six months, no matter the consequences.

True to his convoluted sense of history, Kerry's Vietnam-like call for retreat has come at a time when both the late Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and al Qaeda's "Mujahideen Shura Council" in Iraq -- please rename this the Mufsidoon (Evildoers) Shura Council -- have desperately been trying to incite a full-blown civil war between Sunni and Shi'a populations.

Vietnam Was Only His Start

But, of course, the Vietnam precedent for abandoning an infant democracy was only the first of many such AWOL initiatives on Kerry's part. Beginning with Vietnam, here is his very long cut-and-run record of the last third of a century:

Of course, all of this must be viewed in the light of Mr. Kerry's continued ambitions for the Presidency -- a career path which is quite clearly not a new one.

Another contender for the Presidency -- former Senator and 1972 Democrat nominee George McGovern -- followed exactly the same pattern: First, a brief period of youthful heroism and non-partisan devotion to duty, followed then by a headlong (and lifelong) AWOL plunge into reactionary-Left politics with respect to America's national security needs.

Censure the "ACE" Democrats?

Finally, in a perpetual Al Gore-style pique over his electoral defeat by President Bush in 2004, Mr. Kerry has now become so extreme in his hate-Bush and anti-war rhetoric as to qualify not only as neo-"AWOL" but also as a leading "ACE" (Aid and Comfort to the Enemy) Democrat -- which is particularly obscene during a time of war.

Since his like-minded and even more reactionary-Left colleague, Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, is pressing so urgently for a Senate Resolution of Censure of the President for having "lied" about the reasons for liberating Iraq, Senate Republicans might do well to begin drafting a "fair and balanced" response.

This would be a Resolution of Censure of Senators Feingold, Kerry, Kennedy, Boxer, Durbin, Harkin and other self-evident "ACE" Democrats, based on their own constant barrage of mean-spirited and divisive attacks on the Commander in Chief, the Vice-President, the Secretary of Defense and the entire military establishment -- all at a time of war and national insecurity.

And, as the verbatim record of their public utterances will prove, most of these wartime attacks have come in hate language which is far more vicious than anything these Senators (or their ACE-prone clones in the House, the DNC, the media, the academy and the Hollywood Hills) have ever directed toward the genocidal and "Death to America" likes of bin Laden, al-Sadr, al-Zawahiri, al-Qaradawi, and their suicide mass murderers.

Imagine, please, what would have happened to such "progressive" anti-war critics in 1943-44 who were daily spouting attacks on President Franklin Roosevelt, Secretary of War George Marshall and Generals Eisenhower, MacArthur and Patton -- to the delight of Adolf Hitler, Emperor Hiro Hito and their genocidal versions of hate-America "holy war."
